Figured I would go ahead and get this started. I have been slowly gathering and bartering with people for parts and need to update my process so far.

This is what I am starting with.

Its a bone stock 88' 4runner. And I mean bone stock. It has a fresh lower end with an LC engineering cam. Not another damn thing done to it other than an aftermarket CD player.

So, I went ahead and ordered some sliders for it to save the rockers.

And, then the parts gathering took place. I traded my M-101 Military trailer to Terry at Allpro for a set of 85' 4runner axles. Then he was dumb enough to get me a job. They came with the knuckle ball reinforcement kit, backplate spacers, and I also got my bright Orange Tremclad Paint that I plan to roll-on. The axles are stock at this point, but I will be stuffing the front with some 5.29s and a lockright. The rear got welded with some 5.29s.

Then, I worked out a deal for some 95% tread 35x13.5x15 Toyo OPen Country M/Ts. I aslo worked out a deal with Mike Opper(LTCJeep) for a set of 15x10 AE589s from a Waggie he recently parted out.

During my build up of a customer's Glamis rig, I also ended up with an extra set of six bolt highsteer arms from Marlin Crawler, but will use the FJ80 ends with AllPro Links.

Got around to installing my WRX seats this week as well as the new TA Logo flame sticker for the hood.

To date I have everything I need except for the front SAS parts which I should get from AllPro this week. Still haven't decided on a start date though. I may be moving soon, and don't want to get into the middle of a project before the move. That sucks too, because it means it won't be ready for Pete's run.

Quick update. Grabbed a set of 35x13.5x15 Toyo Open County M/Ts this week, but they will wait for the build before they will fit. Also got a new rear IFS housing with shafts and moved them over to the 4runner since the old shafts were bent. Then, while i had the 3rd member out, I went ahead and welded it up, so now I am at least spooled for Pete's run.

I figured that with the new job and all. Just was curious if you were like moving to Hemet or sumpin.

Not sure yet. I just need something cheaper than what I am paying right now with the new job. I took a pretty decent pay cut to do what I love. So, sacrifices need to be made.....

Just got the O.K. from work to start the build up. So, this thing is going from Zero to HERO in the next five weeks. It needs to be ready to lead the run up Sledgehammer at the AllPro Jamboree January 13th.

When I get home from Ocotillo on Sunday, the plasma cutter is going to get a workout cutting all the IFS stuff off the frame. Should be fun.

Well, all of my parts are being loaded into my Excursion as I type this. I ended up going with the Bellfields from Cal Mini, and Superior inners. They should hold up okay to 35s though. Anyway, this weekend will mark the beginning of the build. I have a butt load of machining, cutting, grinding, welding, gearing, locking, etc, etc, etc to get done.

I have six total weekends to finish this build including a full cage, because I will not wheel without one again. So, come January 12th it will be on a trailer headed for the All-Pro event in Johnson Valley.

Here what she is getting:
1. Complete Solid axle swap with 4" Front Long Travel springs and 14" Bilstein 5100s up front.
2. Rear 5" Long travel springs, 12" travel Bilstein 5100s
3. 85 front axle, Yukon 5.29s, Detroit locker, Birfield Eliminator kit with Super Joints, Diff Armor, and Axle truss.
4. Front Hy-steer setup
5. Rear IFS housing with 5.29s, welded diff, cromoly axles, Diff Armor.
6. Fab up a front winch bumper.
7. Exo the rear tub
8. Full in-cab roll cage with family portion in the rear. Frame tie-in.
9. Removable Tire carrier tied into the rear cage.

>>>>>>>>>>I'll be starting on the front axle rebuild tonight!

MMMM! Parts are good!

OK, It has begun. I started this morning around 9am by starting to strip the frame of the IFS. By 1:30pm everything had been cut off, and I only need to finish grinding the old brackets off the frame.

Let me just say that a Plasma cutter made this VERY Easy. I cannot say enough how great my little MyTech 40amp plasma works. Anyway, here are some progress pics for ya:

I'll have fresh pics up tonight when I get home.

Anyway, I got the front done and springs hung, all the backets plasma'd off the front axle, all the grinding done(I f'n HATE grinding!), and everything painted up front. Let me tell you that the frame tube holes are a PITA because of that inner box support inside. GRRRR! So, since I couldn't start until 2pm on it, that was a decent amount for the day, but I know I have my work cut out for me next weekend.

Goal for the next week is to get all the new backets and gussets welded onto the front and rear axles, Get the rear completely finished, and get the axles hung under the frame so I can get my shock mounts and stuff welded on. I will be getting my 3rds dropped off at Cal Mini on Wednesday to have Troy get the Detroit and 5.29s installed. (Thanks TROY!). Once I get them back, I can rebuild the knuckles up front, install the Bellfields and cromo inners, and get her rolling.

Looks like you're gonna get done ahead of schedule, Scotty. All the major work is done. Gotta get me one of those plasma cutters.

I highly recommmend one. That thing kicks ass. For $450, it will SMOKE a cutting torch. It can cut through 1/4" way faster than a torch can, and clean too!

Progress pics. Sorry, they are so dark though.

35x13.5x15 Toyo M/Ts

Here they are next to a set of 37x12.5x16 Irok Radials.

Pretty damn big for a 35" tire next to a legit 37" Swamper.

Another update today.

Last night I finished a little grinding and removed the 3rd member from the rear axle so I could send it to Troy at Cal Mini for the gear, Detroit, and Spool install. (I hate the smell of gear oil BTW).

Then tonight I decided that the plasma needed more work, so I cut the entire rear axle out in one piece.

So, at this point all the stock stuff has now been removed. The front install is done and it is just waiting on a complete axle and steering. The rear will be done by the end of this weekend and hopefully rolling around so I can build the cage next weekend. That all depends on when I get my new 3rds back though.

I also figured I would add a few other pics of past stuff done to it:

WRX seats installed:

Also got a 12Voltguy.com in-cab winch mount. Still need to install it and wire it in once the new bumper is built:

The new color will be Tremclad bright orange, but that project is still a ways off. Yes, I will be rolling it on as this is a self-leveling paint:

Update for Saturday 12/9/06. Got a lot done today. Shock mounts and Bilsteins now mounted. Front axle is now in place with the truss, ball gussets, and front diff skid all welded on and painted. Ride height seems about right based on what the tire looks like under it too. I'm still waiting on the 3rds to build the front though. I also cut the spring mounts off the rear axle and prepped it for the rear install. Also got the driver's side rear spring mounted. I need to drop the gas tank tomorrow so I can weld on the other spring hanger and shackle hanger. Good thing is that by tomorrow night, the rear axle should be in place for good. Not bad for 3.5 days of work by myself. Pics:
