hi, my 1985 toyota pickup with 22re and A340F 4 speed auto tranny has very similar issues to 85yotapolo's rig. it shifts fine at low speeds but once it hits 35-40 mph it "locks out" ,or so im told. once it locks out it lugs and won't downshift unless you mash the pedal to the floor. there seems to be no happy medium, it either lugs at this speed or you're screaming the motor in second to climb the measly hill. is the 1985 22re with auto tranny gutless? is it supposed to drive like this? it does drive well on flat ground at 35-50 mph, it only has issues when presented with a moderate hill at these speeds. we had the TPS checked out when we recently had the motor replaced, it was fine. the truck only has 85,000 miles on it. i've been told many things... #1 thats the way its supposed to drive. #2 its the kickdown cable. #3 its the transmission control module. #4 its the solenoids. #5 its a fuel injector problem. i realize there are many things it could be, i am just curious if anyone has any insight into this problem or if anyone has had this exact problem and knows what it could be. i appreciate any advice or ideas about this problem. thanks. |

| yes, it does the same thing with any variation of the buttons pushed. this truck has the PWR button, the NRML button and the overdrive button. it does drive slightly better with the power button depressed but it still does the lockout thing regardless. |

| what size tires are you running? the 22re isnt exactly a powerhouse motor, sure itll get the job done but dont ask too much more of it(at least its better than the 3.slow/blow) if you have anything larger than a 31" tire then with the auto its gonna feel like your pulling a trailer every where you go. also is your motor stock or have you done anything like a cam or exhaust ect? i have a cam in mine and a full exhaust(header back) and a K&N and even though i have the 5spd i still have to shift down when i come to hills yeah im running 33s but still the bigger you go with your tires the higher geared (lower numericaly) you will be. and if you have any added weight like bumpers or a winch or toolbox in the back its just that much more taxing on the motor. also try changing the fluid and filter in your tranny its amazing what clean fluid will do |
