There is plenty of info on the Supra AFM mod to the 22RE AFM, but I haven't seen anyone do it on the 3.0L. At least on Pirate anyway. I searched and found nothing so here goes. I will try to keep the thread updated as I do everything:

So, I have decided to try to play with the AFM in my 88' 4runner 3VZE. Right now, I have a stock AFM in my rig attached to a K&N open air element that the previous owner installed.
First of all, I grabbed an AFM from a 91' Camry 2.5L V6. The Toyota Part number on this AFM is 22250-62020.
This is a much larger AFM with a much larger door to allow more air flow to the motor. Same idea as the Supra one on the 22RE. The Camry version has a 3.25" diameter outlet so you will need an adapter to go from the 3.25" outlet to the 2.75" inlet on the stock intake tubing.
If you have the stock air box, then you will also need to modify the box to accept the new AFM. In my case, the K&N adapter bolted right on, but I did have to enlarge the opening since the new door is 2.5" tall and the stock one is much smaller.
Now you can modify the AFM and adjust it accordingly based on 4crawler's instructions for modding the stock 22RE AFM.

Just pull the black cover on top of the AFM with a knife/blade. Mark the brass ring with the teeth with a sharpie where the spring loaded clip and teeth meet. Then push the spring loaded clamp out of the way and adjust it 1 click at a time until your comfortable and idle smoothes out. Usually 1-3 clicks counter clockwise will be the most you will need.

The results should be a much better throttle response and quicker pedal feeling compared to the off idle to 3000rpm power lag that you would normally get. Some people claim better fuel mileage, but don't count on it. The idea is to give you better performance without suffering a fuel mileage drop.
