Okay, I got a little done today. I built the main body of the bumper itself, got one frame mount done, and the hitch built.
Since the 4runner will eventually get a 3.4L to replace the 3.0L, I needed something stout enough to handle towing. I have a small camping trailer setup for pulling it off road. Its basically a smaller version of a M416. So, that is the reason for the 2x3 main body and hitch.

The white pieces are HD Teflon blocks. They will be used to take up the space between the swing away arm and the bumper. That should allow me to clamp the swing arm tight to the bumper.

More progress. I had a couple hours to get some more done:

For now, everything is pretty much just tacked in place for mock up. I have to go grab some more 2x3 .188 wall for the lower swing arm, and the latching mechanism tomorrow. |

Main bumper is done, just needs to be welded up.
Every place I needed to go today was closed. So, I will get back to it when I can grab the 2x3, latch, and the struts.

Bumper is done. Just need more material for the carrier and the latch to finish it all up.

The latching mechanism should be here in a couple days, so I can get back to work on it to finish it soon. It needs to be done before I leave for KOH later this month anyway. Don't want to do a 2000 mile run without a spare. |

| Okay, I just finished up installing Detroit front and rear, 30 spline shafts up front, the other six studs knuckle and steering arm, and will be moving the steering box this weekend to get it ready for KOH. |

Well, Iron Pig hosed me on my tire carrier latch, so I will have to take the camping trailer.
So, I just finished a spare tire mount for my trailer and extended the tongue 24". Also loaded up the spare 3rd member into the trailer axle. I leave Tuesday night at midnight.

| so scotty since the spare tire carrier will swing like a clock instead of like a door I would imagine that mounting a hi-lift won't be an issue but will this design void any hopes of gerry can mounts? (for those of us that don't tote fun trailers) |

It will never see a highlift or gerry cans. #1, gerry can's weigh 45lbs EACH. Highlift is another 25lbs or so. Add a 100lb tire to it, and its just too much weight. I have never seen the point of ever running that much weight on any spindle design and expect it to hold up. When you hear about spindles failing on tire carriers, that is why they fail. Not to mention all the useless weight being added to a rig.
With a 17.9 gallon tank, the rig will do just fine on any run. And, if it won't I have the trailer to carry a can if needed. |

Well, I finally got around to setting up the tire carrier portion of the bumper. I stayed late and knocked out most of it. Now its just a matter of finishing it all up. But, at least its much closer. I am heading in tomorrow to try to get it done and have the tire mounted.

Well, I busted out the rest of the tire carrier. Just need to do some minor finish work, and some better brackets for the strut, but at this point the body of it is done. Also needs a better license plate mount, but I will figure that out later.

Image Insert:

I even took a video of how it open and closes. Its does require controlling the carrier as it closes, but the strut works pretty well and does the job. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlrwxBImH5M |
