Well, the Blazer sold this week as did the 85' xtra cab that I took on trade for some labor. So, I wanted to go ahead and get back into another 4runner again. So, I hit Craigslist looking for an SR5 with the 22RE. Everything was pretty well worked over except for one black one that had the 3.0L.
The lower end was replaced at 224K, and she is now sitting at 237K. Timing chain done at the same time. She actually runs pretty strong. No funky noises except for a little squeak from the throwout bearing. And, for stock 4.10s and 32s, she does pretty damn good on the freeway, even against a headwind.
She spent the first 17yrs of her life in Vacaville, CA. I think I am now the 4th owner. Anyway, it pretty much has every option except the altimeter/inclinometer.
Its in such good shape that this will be the banner rig for Addicted Offroad.

Here we go
Front axle:

New bling for the wheels. I was lucky enough to find these still new in the box. Centerline Hellcats

I'll be running one of my production winch bumpers as usual:

Here's how our day went. Needless to say that I have a lot of experience installing these kits. We are doing two SAS kits simultaneously. Both on 88' 4runners.

8:30am. started prepping my 4runner for cutting the IFS off. Dan showed up and we unloaded all his parts, axle, and tires. He started prepping as well.
9:35am. First cut started on mine.
10:05am. My IFS was on the floor and Dan started grinding on mine. I started cutting on Dan's rig.
11:00am. Both IFS units are out and laying on the floor.

2:00pm, crossmember mounted, frame tubes welded in on Dan's rig.

4:00pm Springs hung, axle in place, tires mounted.

4:30pm. Shop clean and will go after his rear and the rest of mine tomorrow. This is how mine looked at the end of the day.

Good day today. Got Dan's rig done. Well, everything but rear shocks. But, it drove home. My front is done for the most part as well.

Front crossmember reinforcement for winch bumper

So, for everyone wanting to know. You can definitely do a front and rear SAS in two days. Hell, we did 1-3/4 in two days.
Oh, and this is why Warn hubs suck shweaty balls. These hubs came on the 85 axle I got. I'll be ordering Bobby Long's hub gears for my IFS hubs ASAP.

Well, I needed some more hardware and parts to finish the front axle. Mainly a birf, and I really wanted Aisin hubs instead of the POS Warn crap. So, I hit the pic-n-pull this morning and was lucky enough to find a complete 85 front end minus just the 3rd. So, I grabbed everything I needed off of it and now have some spare shafts until I get the Longs.
Anyway, I got the front end assembled for the most part and started the rear spring hangers. I am using a slopped hanger for this build.

Well, I should have been done yesterday, but I hosed the large pinion bearing on the V6 3rd and needed to order a new one. I'm also waiting on some 18mm bolts for the rear shackles.

I have got to get the body lift off. This bitch is way too tall with it on there.

Finished everything up to get her drivable today. Then went and got the Hellcats mounted. This bitch is way too tall with the body lift on it. I am hoping to yank it off tomorrow if I have time and then get the bumper painted and mounted also. I'm also getting a good amount of vibes from the stock shaft as expected. So, a CV Dshaft is a must on the rear.

Now, the install instructions on all of the typical rear kits tell you to move the rear spring hanger forward of the stock position 6". Well, when you do this with the 5" springs, it actually pushes the axle back to far and it will rub severely at the rear of the wheel well. So, I decided to move it forward 7". The shackle hanger still went back 2-3/4" as well, and the shackle angle is perfect as well as the placement of the axle.

I took it to Walmart tonight to have them mount the tires on my bling ass wheels too. Check out the droop I am getting:

Well, I've decided to go duals after all.
So, I picked up a forward shift Tcase from a turbo truck for the crawl box(already 23 spline), and just grabbed a dual case crossmember tonight for cheap. I plan on grabbing a Top shift case next week, and have the 23spline 4.7 gear set ready to go as well.
So, only thing left will be to build the driveshafts to finish the setup.
217:1 crawl ratio in the works. |

So, I went to the pic-n-pulls today to grab some minor stuff. Mainly I was looking for a Reed Valve for my new 84'. Well, I couldn't find the exact one I needed so I was browsing around the import section and saw a Celica sitting there. So, I opened up the door and saw something that I just had to have.
These are fully adjustable, and even have power lumbar support. As soon as I sat in them, I knew I had to have them. I just couldn't believe how clean they were. They are in immaculate condition for the age. These came out of an 86' Celica GTS.

So, I ordered up some new shoes this week and Friday they came in. I have been going round and round trying to figure out what tires I wanted to run. I was going to order the Cooper STTs, but when placing the order, I asked about these. I recently installed a set of 35x12.x17 on a customer's rig, and really liked the tire, and was hoping they would last and hookup as well as a blue label Krawler. These are the first 35x12.5x15 KM2s I have seen to date. At least everyone knows they are now available to boot.
I got them mounted up yesterday on the rig, but it was too late for pics. Sorry for the shitty cell phone pics:

If anyone is interested in these, I can get you a pretty damn good deal on them now too. |

88' 4runner with the 3.0L.
Just pulled out the R150 and chain driven case. Then noticed how much shorter the length between bellhousing and shifter is on the R151 that is replacing it. Like 3" shorter.
Which will push the damn shift right into my dash.
So, how the hell did you guys with the V6 install it without cutting up the dash. I might be able to bend the shifter to work, but still think its going to hit.
R150 length at 13"

R151 length at 10"

Side by side with duals installed on the R151

On a side note, I may end up have to build my own skid plate as well as it looks like the V6 dual case crossmember won't line up with the R151 installed.
Here is a real shitty pic of the interior and where the stock shifter hole is. Its already under the dash, and I will have to push it another 3" further forward.................

Duals and R151 Turbo tranny are in now. I managed to use a few center console parts from a 90' 4runner to get this done along with re-using the intermediate console section from my stock setup. I used the front shifter boot setup, and a rear heater center console from the 90' V6/5spd 4runner. I was able to retain the rear heater, and the twin sticks really help with not have to deal with moving the factory rear window switches and wiper as well.
I modified the 90' V6 shifter slightly to work, and then used a forward shift shifter base with the 88' stick on the front Tcase. The original forward shift shift was hitting the dash/stereo.
IMO, this turned out much better than I thought it would. It actually was a pretty clean install considering the mutt of parts used to do this.

90' 4runner center console

Rear pinion angle is money $$$

Built the front CV shaft myself. I noticed no runout and no vibes on the shaft up to 65mph.

Overall interior

Shipping usually runs $70. Not much I can do with a skid since it must hang below the current crossmember. There really isn't anyway to protect that on my end. It would be up to him to add something below the crossmember.
Anyway, he would be looking at $445 shipped to the door for the bumper. |
