Well, the Blazer sold this week as did the 85' xtra cab that I took on trade for some labor. So, I wanted to go ahead and get back into another 4runner again. So, I hit Craigslist looking for an SR5 with the 22RE. Everything was pretty well worked over except for one black one that had the 3.0L.

The lower end was replaced at 224K, and she is now sitting at 237K. Timing chain done at the same time. She actually runs pretty strong. No funky noises except for a little squeak from the throwout bearing. And, for stock 4.10s and 32s, she does pretty damn good on the freeway, even against a headwind.

She spent the first 17yrs of her life in Vacaville, CA. I think I am now the 4th owner. Anyway, it pretty much has every option except the altimeter/inclinometer.

Its in such good shape that this will be the banner rig for Addicted Offroad.

Here is another video of the carrier opening as well as the tailgate for those who wanted to see the tailgate actually open.

Well, I busted out the rest of the tire carrier. Just need to do some minor finish work, and some better brackets for the strut, but at this point the body of it is done. Also needs a better license plate mount, but I will figure that out later.

Image Insert:

I even took a video of how it open and closes. Its does require controlling the carrier as it closes, but the strut works pretty well and does the job.

Well, I finally got around to setting up the tire carrier portion of the bumper. I stayed late and knocked out most of it. Now its just a matter of finishing it all up. But, at least its much closer. I am heading in tomorrow to try to get it done and have the tire mounted.

makes sense I was thinking expeditioning since we don't exactly crawl much around here.

It will never see a highlift or gerry cans. #1, gerry can's weigh 45lbs EACH. Highlift is another 25lbs or so. Add a 100lb tire to it, and its just too much weight. I have never seen the point of ever running that much weight on any spindle design and expect it to hold up. When you hear about spindles failing on tire carriers, that is why they fail. Not to mention all the useless weight being added to a rig.

With a 17.9 gallon tank, the rig will do just fine on any run. And, if it won't I have the trailer to carry a can if needed.

Well, Iron Pig hosed me on my tire carrier latch, so I will have to take the camping trailer.

So, I just finished a spare tire mount for my trailer and extended the tongue 24". Also loaded up the spare 3rd member into the trailer axle. I leave Tuesday night at midnight.

Okay, I just finished up installing Detroit front and rear, 30 spline shafts up front, the other six studs knuckle and steering arm, and will be moving the steering box this weekend to get it ready for KOH.

The latching mechanism should be here in a couple days, so I can get back to work on it to finish it soon. It needs to be done before I leave for KOH later this month anyway. Don't want to do a 2000 mile run without a spare.

Scotty your an "arteest" I have seen alot of swing away tire carrier designs but you really thought this one through. Can't wait to get one. Well one day.

nice build up scotty looks real clean you have more attention to detail than I can ever muster.
Scotty Posted - 12/28/2008 : 1:46:28 PM
Bumper is done. Just need more material for the carrier and the latch to finish it all up.

Scotty Posted - 12/26/2008 : 4:52:22 PM
Main bumper is done, just needs to be welded up.

Every place I needed to go today was closed. So, I will get back to it when I can grab the 2x3, latch, and the struts.

Scotty Posted - 12/25/2008 : 3:48:29 PM
More progress. I had a couple hours to get some more done:

For now, everything is pretty much just tacked in place for mock up. I have to go grab some more 2x3 .188 wall for the lower swing arm, and the latching mechanism tomorrow.
Scotty Posted - 12/24/2008 : 5:06:44 PM
The white pieces are HD Teflon blocks. They will be used to take up the space between the swing away arm and the bumper. That should allow me to clamp the swing arm tight to the bumper.

Scotty Posted - 12/24/2008 : 1:00:22 PM
Okay, I got a little done today. I built the main body of the bumper itself, got one frame mount done, and the hitch built.

Since the 4runner will eventually get a 3.4L to replace the 3.0L, I needed something stout enough to handle towing. I have a small camping trailer setup for pulling it off road. Its basically a smaller version of a M416. So, that is the reason for the 2x3 main body and hitch.

BFGs and winch all mounted:

And is shipping going to kill him?
Thanks, Eric

Shipping usually runs $70. Not much I can do with a skid since it must hang below the current crossmember. There really isn't anyway to protect that on my end. It would be up to him to add something below the crossmember.

Anyway, he would be looking at $445 shipped to the door for the bumper.
