Posted - 07/14/2009 : 6:53:23 PM I fly in to Phoenix to pick this up on Saturday.
Specs: 2000 4runner Sport 4x4. A/T, 132K, 3" OME lift with the Heavies front and rear, 265s, E-locker, Millennium Silver with gray interior.

So, here is the plan:
This rig will be the build platform for a full set of new bumpers which will include a front plate style winch bumper and a rear tire carrier. For the next year or so I am sticking with the OME lift. But, I'm going to add a 1" body lift and some 285s in the next couple weeks as well as a set of DOM Sliders.
I am sure that at some point I will add a solid axle, but for now the IFS will do just fine. I'll add some armor under it and work on building some new lower control arms as well. |

Posted - 08/11/2010 : 6:53:17 PM So, I was able to get a few of the little things taken care of on the rig that I wanted to fix before its wheeled again.
First thing is that the rear coils were walking around too much without having a centering ring. So, I added one.

Then, when the rear coils would re-seat, they would bang and pop into place. The fix was to drill out the original bump stop cone and bolt it to the upper spring mount. This will guide the coil back into place.

While reinstalling it all I used a 25mm (7/8" spacer) to get me a little more ride height in the rear. Frame height is now at 23" even and rig sits level. No more bottoming out either.

Posted - 07/31/2010 : 09:17:56 AM Holy Cross went well yesterday. A few minor kinks to work out, but all-in-all it was a very good run. Rig worked great.

Posted - 07/29/2010 : 1:31:31 PM Well, I drove it all the way to Buena Vista this morning towing the camper. All I can say is that I love this rig. The Supercharger ROCKS when towing. IMO it does better than my old silver 2000' with only 33s and the same gears.
One thing I did realize when climbing I-70 to the 470 turnoff is that I need to keep it out of OD when the tranny temps start to creep up. The tranny hit 215* at the top, and it was NOT a steep pull. Just a consistent grade where the tranny was in OD, but the Torque convertor was unlocked. But, once I started leaving the OD off and kept the torque convertor from unlocking, it never got higher than 190* even on the Kenosha Pass pull and the pull from Littleton up to Conifer.
In fact, most of the time it was running around 170* even on the big pulls in 3rd.
Top of Kenosha Pass looking down on South Park. Yes, that South Park.

Posted - 07/25/2010 : 3:36:35 PM Finished the rear bumper today. Just waiting for paint to dry overnight before I weld it on. No tire carrier. I think I am going to rig something up in the hitch to carry one for long trips instead of having it on all the time.
Then we went out and tested the flex to see what needed to be trimmed, and what needed to be bump stopped.

Posted - 07/22/2010 : 09:20:57 AM Front bumper is mounted. Now, before everyone gets in a tizzy over the front bumper. This is NOT the production bumper for these 4runners. Its just one I used for the upcoming run and will be the raffle prize for Saturday night at the Colorado 4runner Jamboree.
I also got the sliders built and installed. These WILL be a production model. They are 65" long sliders and utilize four mounting legs. You do NOT need to cut out the pinch welds to mount these sliders to the frame like on my TG sliders. I am using 1.5x1.5" .250 wall legs to mount them to the frame and my usual frame plates (not included with the sliders). The main body is 2x2" .188 wall with 1.75"x.120 wall outer tubes.

Posted - 07/19/2010 : 1:33:48 PM So, I got the ride height adjusted out. Its perfect IMO. I have just enough up travel and tons of down travel. Frame height is at 23-1/4" too. So, its even lower than I aimed for. And, it drives like a dream with the lower height too.
Now, I honestly think that no sway bars are needed at all. It drives great with no more body roll than my old 4runner. I couldn't be more happy with the results at this point.
So, the list for this week to prep for the jambo is:
1. Sliders 2. Something to tow with. I doubt it will be a complete bumper. 3. Front bumper mocked up and welded into place enough for the trip. 4. Bump stops 5. Limit straps 6. Tires balanced
Other than that its ready for the trip.

Posted - 07/17/2010 : 07:27:06 AM So, after a couple days of dialing things in, I am stoked with the results. It drives excellent down the road. All the work dialing in the geometry on the computer has really paid off.
I only get a very slight amount of rear squat when I accelerate. It corners and handles pretty well despite the lack of sway bars too. And I really think that if I add only a front sway bar it would be perfect. Its more than drivable right now though even as is. |

Posted - 07/15/2010 : 06:55:02 AM So, D-day went well. Sort of.
I had two issues on the initial drive. First, when I installed one of the front rotors it got hung up on something under it, so when I drove it, it actually wobbled a lot and would compress the caliper to the point that I would have to pump the brakes to get it to stop. 2nd, was the steering pump get pissing fluid after I would shut it off. I think I have a small leak on the pressure line that is allowing air into the system.
I brought it back into the shop and fixed the rotor issue and was able to get it up to around 55-60mph with no issues. Brakes feel good, but there is body roll that will need to be addressed up front. Other than that it tracks great and feels good. I need to measure the caster at this point and add a couple degrees, but all in all it drives great.
Other than that, its finally on the road and driving. It still needs exhaust done on it though.

Posted - 07/12/2010 : 9:04:38 PM Well, tomorrow is D day. Drive day. Its all buttoned up at this point for a drive. I have a couple minor things to do tomorrow like bleeding brakes, tightening the steering rod ends, greasing all the joints, and installing the crawl box shifter.
I hope to get them done early so I can pull it out of the shop and get it to the exhaust shop to let them work their magic.

Posted - 07/09/2010 : 6:41:13 PM So, its almost drivable right now. I just finished all the steering shaft stuff today. So, its all done, and the PS pump is full. I just need to add some brackets to the frame for the brakelines, bleed them, and then wire in the fuel pump itself. Then fill everything with fluids and bolt in the rear shaft to take it for a spin.
I am really digging the lack of body roll without any sway bars too. Its got less than my old silver 4runner with the IFS lift under it, so I am hoping that no sway bars will be okay for a while. |

Posted - 07/03/2010 : 4:35:05 PM Well, today all of the hardwork for the last few months on this rig is starting to payoff.
Over the last week, I tore down the entire front end and finished the grinding, welding, gusseting, and painting of everything. I also triple rated the coilovers, and put the shorter 10" front springs into the coilovers. I then built the front 3rd and got it installed and finished the front axle reassembly. So, everything is now installed into the front axle and I can call it done.
Then I moved onto the rear shock mounting. Everything I tried to build for the rear shock hoops to mount them outside the frame just wasn't working for me. Plain and simple is that I didn't like it. However, I happened to have a pair of CJ7 front shock mounts that we pulled off last week. I cleaned them up really well, and much to my surprise, they were perfect for what I wanted. 6" of up travel in the rear.
So, the 13" Poly Performance Big Black Cock Shocks are now installed. I went with the Poly shocks because it was one of the few shocks that I could order for coil spring applications in the valving I wanted.
At the beginning of the entire build my target frame height was 23.5". Right now the front of the frame under the door, is at 24.5". With sliders, bumpers, and a gas tank still left to install it really looking like 23.5" will be achieved. Also, now with the coilovers charged to 250 PSI, and the rear shock on it, I am really happy with the amount of body roll there is (or lack there of). We will see what needs to be done with a sway bar when I drive it, but I am very happy at this point.
With a few more quality days of work, I might actually be able to drive it by the end of next weekend.
I still need to tear down the rear for paint, but that should go quickly. Then I will move to brake and ARB plumbing.

Posted - 06/28/2010 : 5:53:43 PM Got the tranny cooler in today. Also got the rear gas tank skid mocked up. I have had this piece of dimpled steel for like a year and couldn't figure out what I want to do with it until today. Its only 1/8", but its strong as hell, and should work really well for a skid.
I also ditched the stock air box and mocked in this cheap ass filter. It frees up some room and now I have a spot for the ARB compressor.

My goal is to spend an hour or two on it everyday while I work on other stuff to get it done in time for the Colorado run. |
